Benefits of Surgical Recovery Therapy
Following any surgical procedure, invasive surgery or minimally invasive surgery, some degree of swelling and bruising are expected. These side effects are painful and disheartening to patients who want to be healed and “good as new” as soon as they arrive home from their procedure.
Some surgeries are so minor that people are up and about their daily lives as if nothing happened within a few days. Other surgeries are more invasive and traumatic to the body. These surgeries can leave significant swelling and bruising that, without treatment, take a long time to go away.
Lymphatic Drainage done ahead of surgery helps to minimize the amount of swelling and bruising as well as the lumps and bumps that will result. Lymphatic therapy after surgery helps it to go away faster, and provides you with a great detox.
How Lymphatic Treatments
Help You Heal After Surgery
Surgery disrupts the natural flow of our lymphatic system.
Following any kind of trauma (including surgery) the body pools fluid in the injured area to create a natural splint. This causes extreme tenderness in the skin in that area.
Lymphatic Therapies gently move this fluid away from these traumatized tissues, immediately reducing the hyper-sensitivity and pain.
A Disrupted Lymphatic System Can Cause Lumps and Bumps
Surgery, especially liposuction done during plastic surgery, can cause lumps and bumps that can hang around for months afterwards. Not only can these be fixed in a gentle and painless manner, but they also can be prevented by lymphatic massage. Click here to learn more about the lumps and bumps after plastic surgery.
Lymphatic Drainage can speed up the recovery time significantly, and it does more than just reduce swelling. It jump-starts the lymphatic system to carry away the wastes of damaged, broken down tissue and facilitate the influx of new nutrient-rich fluid to the surgical site.
Lymphatic drainage also stimulates the immune system which can help prevent wound infection postoperatively and helps avoid complications after surgery. Furthermore patients report reduced postoperative pain after their surgical procedures, reducing requests for opioid analgesics and other strong pain medicines.
Stimulation of lymphatic flow in post-operative swollen areas lessens the risk of fibrosis (hardening of the tissue). Lymphatic drainage also aids in raising the total white cell count, helping to prevent post-operative infection.

If you have had cosmetic surgery,
your surgeon likely suggested that you get a “lymphatic massage”
to help with the extensive healing process.

Non-Cosmetic Surgeries
Surgical Recovery Therapy is appropriate following most types of surgeries including:
knee replacement surgery, mastectomy, breast reductions, wisdom teeth removal, orthopedic surgeries, thyroidectomy, cholecystectomy (gall bladder removal), hysterectomy, hernia repair, back surgery, etc.
Lymphatic Massage (properly called Manual Lymphatic Drainage) or Electro-Lymphatic Therapy (ELT), can dramatically reduce post-operative edema (swelling) which reduces pain.
Moving the lymph away from the incision also helps pull away the broken down tissue and waste from the area and promotes the delivery of fresh nutrients to speed the healing process.
One extra benefit of lymphatic massage is that it has an analgesic (pain relieving) effect – AND it can help you sleep much better that night. You might even take a nap when you get home.
